Retention Is a System
"Retention isn't always determined by one thing alone. It's a system. It's a collaboration of efforts."
That is how Danielle opens Episode 25 of Behind the Brilliance, and it sets the frame for everything that follows. Most lash artists troubleshoot retention by changing one variable -- usually the adhesive. But poor retention rarely has a single cause. It is almost always a combination of factors, and fixing one without addressing the others produces inconsistent results.
In this episode, Danielle and Ashtyn walk through all five factors in order, explain how they interact, and share the troubleshooting framework Danielle uses when a client reports that something is wrong.
Factor 1: Environment
Your lash room is a retention variable. Humidity and temperature affect how adhesive cures -- how quickly it sets, how long the working window lasts, and how well it bonds. Adhesive that performs beautifully in one environment can feel sluggish or too fast in another, not because the product has changed but because the room has.
Adhesive storage matters just as much. How you store your bottle between appointments -- refrigerating the main stock, keeping working bottles away from light and air -- affects freshness and therefore adhesive performance. An old or improperly stored bottle is a retention variable most artists attribute to the client's lifestyle instead of their supply chain.
Factor 2: Prep
Clean lashes. That is the foundation. If the natural lash surface has residue, oil, or buildup on it, the adhesive does not have a clean surface to bond to -- and no amount of adhesive quality makes up for that.
The water scrub method -- which Danielle and her team use at Garnet Lash and teach in full detail inside the Ultimate Lash Course -- is one of the most underused prep techniques in the industry. It removes residue from the lash line in a way that many dry prep methods do not. The episode at [2:55] is where Danielle mentions the course as the place to see the method demonstrated.
Factor 3: Placement
"Placement is the most ignored retention factor."
Danielle says this at [14:32], and it is the throughline of the entire episode. Placement is where the majority of actual retention problems originate -- not the adhesive, not the products, not what the client does at home. The extension's position on the natural lash.
Three components: distance from the lid (not too close, not too far), base contact (how much of the extension base is touching the natural lash), and the wrap technique. The wrap is what Danielle describes as making the extension feel like it magnetizes onto the natural lash -- the extension should surround the natural lash at the base, not just touch it on one side.
Artists who have dialed in their placement frequently find that their other retention issues resolve without changing anything else. Because placement was the variable all along.
Factor 4: Product Use
"You shouldn't need them. You need clean lashes, a good adhesive, and a good technique."
That is Danielle at [5:19] on primers, bonders, and sealers. Brilliant Lash Pro does not use or distribute these products. The case is simple: lash artists who are getting excellent retention without them exist in large numbers. The products are not doing the work that skill and technique do.
What does matter in the product category: adhesive quality and freshness, and lash tray quality. The Adhesive Monthly Club exists for exactly this reason -- fresh adhesive shipped on a regular schedule so you are never working with an old bottle and wondering why your retention is inconsistent.
Factor 5: Client Habits
"We always say that your retention is 50% you and 50% your clients."
Danielle at [7:27]. The client half includes: sleeping position (face-down sleepers are fighting gravity every night), touching and rubbing, the skincare products they use near their eyes, and how they handle sweat.
The sweat one is the counter-intuitive point of the episode: it is not the water in sweat that destroys lash extensions. It is what is in the sweat. Salt and chemicals from the body break down the adhesive in a way that clean water does not. Hot yoga, saunas, and intense exercise produce the kind of sweat that accelerates retention loss -- not a quick shower.
The tissue paper analogy from [12:10] is worth remembering: "Your eyes are like tissue paper. It kind of just absorbs all the oil." Oil-based products applied anywhere on the face travel along the skin and arrive at the lash line. Clients who use rich night creams or oil cleansers and do not understand this are undoing the set between every appointment.
When Retention Goes Wrong: The 4-Question Framework
When a client reports bad retention, there are two responses: take fault, or investigate. Danielle's framework is the latter.
"That's when we need to go into full FBI detective mode."
The 4-question troubleshooting method from [15:41]:
-
When did it start? If the lashes started falling immediately after the appointment, that points to adhesive or placement. If it happened two weeks in, that points to client lifestyle or environment.
-
What lashes are falling? Inner corners, outer corners, full sets uniformly? The pattern reveals the source. Inner corners often point to rubbing. Outer corners can point to pillow contact.
-
Which eye? One eye losing more than the other is almost always a sleeping-side or rubbing-side issue.
-
What changed? New skincare product, new gym routine, new sleeping partner, vacation, illness. Something changed. Find it.
Four questions. Full picture.
The Summary
"If every single one of your clients has bad retention, I hate to break it to you, but it's not your client's fault."
That is the self-accountability line of the episode. And it leads directly into the close: "Retention starts before you dip your fan into the adhesive. The best adhesive in the world cannot save poor placement."
The system view of retention changes how you troubleshoot it. Not one variable. Not the adhesive. Not the client. Five factors, in order, working together.
