Overrated vs. Underrated in the Lash Industry
Episode 15 of Behind the Brilliance is the most free-form one yet. Danielle and Ashtyn ran through a long list of lash products, techniques, trends, and business practices and gave their honest take on each: overrated or underrated. Some answers are predictable. Overrated: Classic Lashes
Ashtyn did not hold back. "Yeah, classic lashes can die." For artists who have moved into volume and mega volume, classics can feel like a technique that gets undervalued in how much skill they actually require and overvalued in how universally applicable they are for clients who want a full look.
Overrated: Pre-Made Fans
Ashtyn's take on pre-made fans is direct: "Handmake your fans. Do not buy pre-made." The argument is that handmade fans give you more control over weight, shape, and placement, and that relying on pre-mades can become a crutch that slows your development as a volume artist.
Overrated: Brand Hopping
Ashtyn put it this way: "Be a homie hopper, but not a brand hopper." Constantly switching between product lines makes it harder to understand how your supplies actually work and what's causing any issues you run into. Commitment to a product line long enough to truly understand it is how you develop real skill.
Underrated: Raising Prices
Ashtyn's take: "Once you are fully booked and you have a wait list, that's when you know it's time to raise your prices." Lash artists often wait too long to raise their rates even when demand clearly supports it. Being booked out is a signal, not a reason to keep taking on more clients at the same rate.
Overrated: DIY Lash Clusters
Both Danielle and Ashtyn were clear here. Danielle: "DIY lash clusters. Get out of my face." The concern is client safety, improper application by untrained hands, and the damage DIY clusters can cause to natural lashes.
Underrated: Just Do Your Lashes Better
Ashtyn's comment on a number of overrated products and shortcuts came down to this: "Just do your lashes better." Technique, consistency, and product knowledge will always outperform any product shortcut.
The Pregnancy Lashes Moment
At the 5:43 mark, Danielle makes a case for getting lash extensions while pregnant. Her delivery is hilarious: "You need lashes for your delivery. You don't want your baby to come out and see a [bleep] naked mole rat." It's one of the most shareable moments in the episode.
