Most lash brands would never put their product next to a competitor's in a live demo. We did.
In Episode 2 of Behind the Brilliance, Danielle and Ashtyn put Softline, Jupiter, and two competitor brands on the same tray and fanned them live — no cuts, no do-overs, no favoritism. Here's what they found.
What Makes a Great Volume Lash Extension?
Three things separate a great volume lash from a mediocre one: fanability (how easily and consistently the lash fans off the strip), softness and flexibility (the polyester-nylon blend that allows the lash to wrap during placement), and taper at the tip (a fine, feathery end vs. a blunt, synthetic-looking one).
The Caterpillar Effect (And How to Avoid It)
If you've seen a set that looks dense, heavy, or fuzzy at the tips — that's the caterpillar effect. It's almost always caused by the lash, not the artist. Blunt-tipped extensions don't taper the way natural lashes do, so they look thick and synthetic regardless of your technique. Softline's fine taper is why clients consistently describe the result as feathery and natural, even with a full volume set.
The Value Breakdown: More Lines, Lower Price
Softline trays come with 20 lines for $17. Comparable competitor trays offer 16 lines for $17.90. More product, better quality, lower price — with most artists using no more than two lines per client per appointment.
Choosing the Right Curl for Your Client's Eye Shape
Eye shape guides your starting point, but your client's natural lash angle is the real determining factor. A C curl works well for open, non-hooded shapes. CC is a strong middle ground and works beautifully on deep-set or hooded eyes in a reverse cat eye. D curl offers maximum lift but isn't universally right for hooded eyes — always build in a feedback loop at the first appointment.
